Mrs Tiggywinkle

Late yesterday afternoon we were busy out in the garden having a tidy up. We are due to have a tree chopped down today and things needed to moved.
One of those things was a big blue plastic tarpaulin which when G gave it a bit of a shake so we could fold it up and get it put away it revealed this little bundle of prickles.
It's the second time we have found hedgehogs living in our garden, well three times if you take into consideration the time G called out to me from the garden 'to come quickly there's a hedgehog hiding in the grass' only to find he had taken out the furry hedgehog doorstop we use in the house.

We quickly made a make shift hide for it using some straw left over from when I made the scarecrow with S last year and then covered that over with a drawer from an old chest of drawers in the shed propped up on an angle against the fence, then we added some more straw and then draped a smaller tarpaulin over the top of it all. We hoped we hadn't traumatised it too much and that maybe it would be ok with it's new home but G went out this morning for a quick look and it's gone which is making us feel a little guilty for disturbing it.

  1. How wonderful to have a hedgehog at close quarters. We saw one last year in our garden and tried to tempt it with cat food but it wasn't interested and quickly went on its way. You never know he might just be back soon. I thought that I read or heard somewhere that they do quite a bit of travelling for something so small.

  2. Awww, I'm sure it'll be back. It must like it in your garden. We often see hedgehogs out and about their business when we take Archie for a walk at night.

  4. Aah,what a sweet story.I'm sure he'll be back.I've heard you mustn't leave milk out for them as it upsets their tums, but dog or cat food is ok.

  5. How lovely! We don't get hedgehogs here as we get badgers - and they sometimes eat hedgehogs. I'm sure it'll have just gone off to find a comfy new hiding place, but maybe it had just gone looking for earthworms or something and will come back. You'll have to look out for him :)

  13. Oh, how lovely. I remember seeing hedgehogs in the garden often as a child but don't think i've ever seen one the whole time we've lived in Leeds. I guess it's too built up. At least you knew what to do when you made a hide - I would not have had a clue! x
