International Womens Day

Last year I shared a couple of books about the lives of some fascinating and inspiring women.
This year I'm sharing some names with you.
Lizzie Siddal, Janey Morris, Fanny Cornforth and Annie Miller.
If you don't recognise their names you'll recognise their faces.
These women, talented in their own right, were models, wives and lovers to Pre-Raphaelite artists and their images were captured forever more in the art the Brotherhood produced.
The images shown here come from this book. A birthday gift from G, purchased after we had gone to a Pre-Raphaelite exhibition held at our local art gallery many years ago.

  1. I didn't recognise any of the names and to be honest, I don't know that much about art either. What a lovely gift though, something to remember your day together at the exhibition and also so you could learn a little more about what you'd seen.

  2. No, I didn't recognise any of the names either ...
I do enjoy looking at paintings in galleries and shops - but I'm no expert. I either like a painting or not ... and choose that way!

I can remember seeing a film a little while ago called 'Girl with a Pearl Earring'

The oil painting 'Girl with a Pearl Earring' by 17th-century Dutch painter Johannes Vermeer, is lovely.

Hope you had a good International Women's Day!

    All the best Jan

  5. Yes, they are all beautiful! I didn't know it was International Women's Day yesterday until the guy at the post office told me! It is great though to have such a day to recognize, honour and appreciate women. Hope it was a lovely day for you yesterday and the rest of the week goes well too. X

  8. Oh my gosh! Found your blog via Jo at "Through the Keyhole"....I LOVE the Pre-Raphalites and have several books about them. Have you read "Lizzie Siddal - Face of the Pre-Raphaelites" by Lucinda Hawksley? It's a great read - and such a sad story. I look forward to reading more of your blog.
