words and music

I love listening to the radio.
Radio 4 keeps me company most of the time I'm at home.

There are two reasons for enjoying it in the last 2 days.

Firstly, yesterday afternoon I switched on half way through a short programme by Laurence Llewelyn Bowen. I know he's not everyones cup of tea, but I do love the way he uses language.
In this programme about Gertrude Jekyll he is visiting the home of Edward Lutyens and in talking about the construction of the archway to the main porch he says it's 'very, very Lutyens flavour. Lovely and crunchy. Big chewy bits of stone like treacle toffee. And great big wooden beams like Flakes.'
It may be because Flakes are just about my favourite chocolate bar, but I think his description is fabulous.

Second reason is this morning on Womans Hour hearing Lucinda Belle singing and playing her harp. I've never heard her before. She describes herself as a jazz harpist. I'm going to be putting her new CD on my birthday present wishlist.

The TV I think I could live without.
But I'd really miss the radio.
It has provided me with so much knowledge, information and entertainment.

  1. Yes it's great to listen to the radio and you can do other things at the same time...unlike TV.There's not much on the telly worth watching these days anyway.Talking of LLB.Have you seen his wife recently? She looks fabulous having lost loads of weight!

  2. I don't have a TV and forget to listen to radio outside the car, but I do seem to keep tuning in to really great programs as I am driving around doing errands on the weekend. Several weeks ago there was a piece on an autistic child healed by horses, and last night there was something (less uplifting, admittedly) on how soldiers use certain music to motivate themselves as they go into combat. You never know what you might learn!

  3. I feel exactly the same - the radio is a constant companion. I don't have a TV, and the radio accompanies me through my every day; I love sitting eating lunch and listening to the World at One, I fall asleep to Gideon Coe on 6Music and I wake up to the radio every morning. And what is a weekend breakfast without tea and radio 4?!

  4. I love LLB - I like anyone who entertains with words. I dont get chance to listen to the radio often as I am never usually on my own in house - in one room - enough . I do love to listen to Stuart Maconie though.

  5. I saw LLB once in the flesh and was stunned equally by how sharp is suits are and by how short he is!
Should listen to the radio but love the quiet when my boys are off at school.

  7. You've reminded me of how much I used to enjoy listening to Woman's Hour. I must make it a habit to start listening again. x
